Athletics Kenya (AK) Universities branch have named a team of 14 to represent the institution at the 2014 East Africa University Games set for Uganda between December 17 and 21.
The team will feature eight men and six women who were selected during trials held at the Kenyatta University grounds over the weekend.
The athletes will feature in various disciplines in track and field.
They include Florence Wasike, a former national champion, who will compete in 110m/H and 400m/H, Edelqueen Chebet (triple and long jump), Esther Macharia (800m, 400m and high jump), Faith Keitany (10,000m and 5,000m), Ann Gachegwa (800m and 1500m) and Vera Rorey (100m and 200m).
The men’s division has Anderson Ndung’u (high jump and 400m/H), Peter Kemboi (3000m steeplechase), Hillary Pkiach long and triple jump), Simon Chege (discus and shot put), Joshua Angwata (javelin and shot put), Samuel Njoroge (100m and 200m), Wesley Yego (100m and 200m) and Andrew Kibet (800m and 1500m).
The regional event, to be hosted by Uganda Christian University, will be the ninth edition of the bi-annual competition and is expected to feature about 40 universities from 12 countries.
During the trials, Keitany of Kitui won her 5,000m race in a time of 18:33.01 followed by guest runner Janet Kwamboka in 19:24.06. Guest William Waweru won the men’s 5000m race in 15:36.03 followed by MKU’s Kiplangat Mitei (16:10.00). Davis Kiprop was the top KU runner at position three in 16:13.02.
Andrew Kibet of KU won the 800m event in 2:04.01 followed by team-mate John Kioi (2:04.05) and Gilber Ngetich (2:04.08). Esther Macharia won the women’s edition in 2:42.07 followed by Daisy Cherono (2:47.0) and Loice Peter (3:14.10).
