This Sunday, weather permitting, there will be a rare race at the Ngong Race track.
The track itself at the moment is in good order and It has the capability of absorbing an awful lot of rain.
In addition to The Derby Trial which has 4 quality runners, (one of whom is unbeaten) there is The Civil Service Gold Cup. This is an annual race at this time of year.
The rare feature is that there are two previous DERBY WINNERS and a fancied contender for this year’s DERBY.
Hawker’s Fury won in 2017. Western Ballad won in 2016 and then there is Cheney who won in The Kenya Guineas in 2016.
This year’s DERBY CONTENDER competing in this race will be the aptly named Free Wheeler. This Spencer owned colt from South Africa is so far unbeaten but he will be taking on older and stronger horses.
The Bengough’s lovely mare Western Ballad is a triple classic winner and is also unbeaten in two seasons. Add Hawker’s Fury to the mix (a triple crown winner in 2017) and one has the makings of a serious battle royal between very good horses.
The Derby Trial for the Soprani Challenge Cup will feature four “hot” horses who will undoubtedly feature in the main Derby on 22 April. However the trial is 340 metres shorter than the main Derby distance. It will be a great pointer to the min race contenders when they meet on the 22nd .
A great afternoon’s racing is in store with interesting races in this 8 race card. Several races with 7 to 10 entries.
First race is at 1.05pm.
The Civil Service Gold Cup (the Watson Trophy) will be the third race at 2.40pm.
So come racing
