Two of Uganda’s three swimmers at the Commonwealth Games will be in action on the first day of the event today (Thursday).
Female participant Jamila Lunkunse is lined up in Heat 3 of the 50m breaststroke while Arnold Kisulo will compete in the men’s 50m butterfly Heat 2 and 100m backstroke (Heat 1).
Uganda is represented by 62 athletes including a Rugby 7s side expected to compete against Australia, England and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile Vice President Edward Ssekandi had a word of encouragement for Uganda’s Commonwealth Games team this afternoon ahead of the opening ceremony at the Celtic Park later tonight.
Ssekandi, flanked by Uganda’s High Commissioner to the UK Joyce Kikafunda and Sports State Minister Charles Bakkabulindi, assured the team of total government support.
“I have assessed you and seen that you have stamina and the swagger to make Uganda proud,” noted Ssekandi.
Badminton, table tennis and squash players will also be in action tomorrow morning.
