Standard Chartered Bank yesterday(Wednesday) announced its support of the Uganda Sports Press Association Annual road safety campaign which will be held this Saturday 20th September 2014 in Entebbe.
This was announced at a joint press conference held between the two entities at the Standard Chartered Bank headquarters.
This year the Bank is sponsoring USPA to a tune of Ugx 4,000,000 (Four million shillings) to facilitate the organization of the road safety campaign.
While addressing journalists at a press conference, Head, Corporate Affairs Standard Chartered Bank, Herbert Zake said that the Bank is committed to supporting USPA in the road safety campaign to support the continuity of its agenda of creating awareness about road carnage and save the lives of Ugandans.
“I highly commend the passion and effort USPA has over the years invested in relentlessly creating awareness about road safety. This is a worthwhile initiative that Standard Chartered Bank has supported since 2007. We affirm our commitment to making a contribution towards sensitizing Ugandans about road safety and in the same spirit as USPA will dedicate this initiative to the spirit of our own employees like the Late Daniel Mirembe and his entire family who perished in a fatal car accident in Mabira forest in 2010.
May the souls of the departed journalists and our employees who have been victims of road carnage rest in eternal peace.
“There is a critical need to reduce the number of road accidents in our country as most accidents arise out of negligence and could have been avoided. It is every citizen’s responsibility and not just the government to play their role in ensuring we are safe on our roads . I applaud all stakeholders in the fight against road carnage and appeal to them to continue investing in road safety initiatives. I also request my fellow citizens especially those who pull down road signs to desist from this habit for the good of all Ugandans and drivers to use handsets if they really must drive while talking on phone.”.
The president of the Uganda Sports Press Association, Mark Namanya thanked Standard Chartered for the sponsorship and partnership once again and said;
“Standard Chartered Bank has been a reliable partner in the fight against road carnage and with this year’s sponsorship of Ugx 4 million, it will make the preparations a lot smoother. I understand that the Bank has lost several of its staff in road accidents, most notably, the loss of their staff and his entire family in Jinja, with these calamities, the cause is more relevant to them.
As USPA this cause is very important to us too having lost the USPA executives in Jinja and we will continue to actively create awareness about the road safety’.
Namanya concluded by calling upon Ugandans to be more vigilant and caring towards fellow road users to avoid unnecessary road accidents.
Come this Saturday, 20th September, Standard Chartered Bank will stand by USPA as they celebrate their 12th anniversary since their executives perished in a road accident and create awareness on the dangers of motor accidents and road carnage.
