16th Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally:
15th – 16th August 2014
Barely a month to the flag off of the 2014 Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, the local organizing team received a boost worth U.shs 100,000,000.
The offer was announced at a special ceremony held at Shell Lugogo on Wednesday evening.
The event also marked the official launch of the rally, making its 16th edition, the 5th on the African Rally Championship.
Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) President, Jack Wavamunno appreciated the offer from the fuel giants.
“We thank Vivo Energy for the continued and committed support towards supporting the motorsport fraternity and as a federation we are working closely with all stake holders to host a successful event”, Wavamunno, who also promised strict safety measures remarked.
552 Km will be covered for the entire race with competitive section as long as 221 km.
“The longest section will be 37.6 km while the shortest will be 14.8km with two sections driven on private land (Zion Estates) to further strengthen safety”, David Bitaaro, the Clerk of the course (COC) added.
Hans Paulsen, Managing director of Vivo Energy had special praise for the Vivo fuel brand towards all the consumers and rally fans.
Assistant Inspector of Police, Andrew Sorowen, who also attended the colourful launch stressed the issue of safety ahead of entertainment.
“As police, we are going to work very closely with the organizers, drivers, fans to have a safe rally free of injury incidents that may lead to loss of life”, he promised.
Sorowen also hinted of the role already being undertaken by the police towards community policing as the race gets closers and closer.
About 30 local rally crews have confirmed participation and another 10 foreign legion is expected.
