New to adventure mountain biking? This event is a superb introduction to multi-day MTB stage racing. For those new to GPS self-navigation, the route navigation will be fairly straight forward, perfect for learning your way around GPS navigation. Nothing along the route will be technical nor too arduous, a medium level of training is required to complete both days. Teams can enter for a single day or both days. Race distance for day 1 is approx 70 km and day 2 approx 50 km, each day will have one water/feed station along the route. Medical support will be provided.
RVO Malepo Hills is a partial service MTB stage race run in the same way as the Standard Chartered Rift Valley Odyssey ; 2-person teams utilising 100% GPS self navigation. Teams will start at 2 minute intervals, therefore one GPS per team is a prerequisite as there will not be any route marking nor signage!
Malepo Hills Conservancy is a private Conservancy, 17 km south of Kajiado town, in a remarkably wild area that remains so close to Nairobi; our hosts are Steve and Helena Grant. The wider conservation area includes the adjacent Kudu Hills which are very aptly named; during route survey last year I came across herds of kudu, greater eland, gerenuk, impala, grants gazelle, wildebeest and giraffe; there was also evidence of elephant and lion.
Malepo Conservancy can be found here. Driving distance and time from JKI Airport is 83 km or 1h30min.
RaceCamp location is here, only 1.5 km from the entrance to Malepo Conservancy.
