Just days after winning the World Mountain running junior (Men) event in Italy, Phillip Kipyeko is in a quick rush to return to the hilly Bukwo terrains of North East Uganda to train head of upcoming events.
“I have to train hard as I look forward to a road race in Groningen, Netherlands next month”, Kipyeko told Kawowo Sports after returning from Casette di Massa, Italy.
Kipyeko narrates, the key password to team Uganda’s great performance at the world mountain running event was self belief and the awesome preparations prior the event.
“We trained well and we were ready to emulate the 2013 performance of the mountain running team that finished in the top 4 positions”, Kipyeko adds.
He finished 11th at this year’s African Cross country championships.Kipyeko showed his excellent climbing ability over the steep paths winding up through the white marble walls of the Cava di Gioia dominating the race in 40:51.
He was 6th overall at the World Junior championships (5000M) in Eugene (USA) and anticipates to build on that experience for a better showing in Netherlands next month.
His compatriot Joshua Cheptegei, had to pull out of the World Championships in Casette di Massa at the last moment.
Because Uganda took one individual in the juniors, Turkey won the team title with 12 points ahead of Italy (34 points) and Great Britain (47 points).
