Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) members have today unanimously voted the Commonwealth 10,000m gold medalist, Moses Kipsiro as the best sports personality for the month of August.

Kipsiro retained the 10,000m gold during the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the decision to reward him with the accolade was agreed upon in unison by all sports media personalities who attended the Nile Special end of August monthly meeting at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

“Surely, Kipsiro deserves this award for his toil,” Patrick Kanyomozi, a sports journalist working with Nation Media group remarked as he nominated the Kipsiro.

Moses Kipsiro’s 10,000m gold helped Uganda finish 18th overall out of 71 countries at the games (with a total of 5 medals).

Kipsiro became the first runner in history to defend the 10,000m title at the common wealth games.

This is by far Uganda’s biggest collection of medals since 1974 when the country picked nine. At the previous Games in New Delhi, India, Uganda got two gold medals all won by Kipsiro.

800m bronze medalist Winnie Nanyondo, KCC Leopards and City basketball teams, Uganda Golf team and the rallying crew of Omar Mayanja and Leone Ssenyange were commended.

KCC leopards and City Oil basketball teams won bronze at the Zone 5 championships in Mombasa, Kenya while Omar Mayanja and Leone Ssenyange were Uganda’s best rally crew at the 2014 V-Shell pearl of Africa rally won by Kenya’s Rajib Rai.

Team Uganda Golf dethroned Kenya, winning their 4th East African Golf challenge title at Entebbe Golf Course.

Meanwhile, Kipsiro will be crowned on the 18th September 2014 at a dinner to take place at Imperial Royale, just two days before the members will conduct the annual road safety campaign in Entebbe.
