Machine and drivers’ skills were put to rigorous tests in the Mzizima Rally Sprint 2015 organised by Mzizima Motor Sports Club (MMSC) in Bagamoyo, Coast Region on Sunday.
Teenager Jamil Khan, driving a Subaru all-wheeldrive, twice covered the dusty 1.5 kilometre track in 2 minutes 53 seconds to snatch the Best Overall Trophy in the rally. Khan also received the first prize in his class of allwheel- drive vehicles.
Out of the 37 entries, less than ten drivers managed to cover the track, which was up and down a hill with tricky turns and twists.
A car driven by a lady driver experienced front wheel tyre burst, there were two breakdowns which needed to be towed away and one almost went tops just when the driver was negotiating a left turn.
No one was hurt as volunteers and track officials used human power to put it all right. Lady driver Shazia Khatau in a Nissan X-trail, despite having a burst front tyre, quickly came back in high spirits and finished the track.
She was, however, not as good as her competitors speed-wise and was awarded a ‘MMSC Rally Queen’ trophy. Mzizima Motor Sports Club Chairperson, Hidaya Thabit Kamanga, who is also a lady, worked tirelessly with event Secretary Azim Somji, Clerk of the Course Jabu Maalim and Faheem Aloo to keep the crowd on their toes.
All the participants were awarded certificates and about seven sponsors, including the ‘Daily News’, were awarded recognition certificates.
The event was divided in five categories – Rally cars, Two-wheel-drive cars, Allwheel- drive cars, Sports utility vehicles and 4×4-wheel vehicles.
Three best winners from each category were awarded trophies by the sponsors and veteran rally drivers.
