Swaleh Balala is the winner of the 2015 Watamu Triathlon Championship held at Turtle Bay in Watamu on Sunday morning. Balala clinched the Olympic Category title after beating stiff competition from Abdallah Mansur and Mohamed Suleiman Said.
The Sprint Category trophy went to Ismael Mohamed with a time of 1:19:24 and Gilbert Orio settled for second place at a time of 1:32:21 with David Obura completed the podium.
The Special Prize was claimed by 14 year old Ryan Sio of Kabarak High School, while Laura Surkaza from Spain grabbed the Best Female award.
It is the sixth year of the event and the next one will be held in October at Turtle Bay in Watamu, Kilifi County. The race was attended by athletes from Italy, United Kingdom and Spain in a move to show that tourists are still visiting the country despite travel advisories.
Aida Rajab, the organiser of the competition acknowledged the support from KICC, Turtle Bay, Finis and Getrudes Foundation and proceeds will go to a charity in the area.
Watamu Triathlon is the first Pan-African triathlon event of the year that brings together over 200 local and international amateur and professional athletes of all ages for the two day event.
The aim is to grow the sport of triathlon, develop the local community economic diversity and enhance domestic tourism. The triathlon is a multiple-stage athletic sport consisting of three different events, typically swimming, cycling, and running that are completed one after the other.
