A poorly mounted strategy and the opening fast pace of the race saw Kenya miss yet another men’s title in a week when they were beaten to the finish by Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede in the London Marathon on Sunday. Emmanuel Mutai winner of the 2011 race, found himself staging a lone fight at the leadership after a collapse of sorts saw the group of Kenyan favourites flail in the chasing pack, surrendering a build-up that failed to gather momentum.
Mutai, in familiar territory towards the last five kilometres of the race, tried and failed to inject pace in his feet as the torturous course took its toll on him allowing Kebede, the 2010 champion to claim the title. With one kilometre to go, Mutai gave his all but failed to respond positively to the sudden attack by the Ethiopian.
