Athletics Kenya (AK) Nairobi branch will host the first edition of the 2014/2015 cross country series on Saturday at the Posta grounds along Ngong Road.
The meeting will kick off Kenya’s campaign to defend the World Cross Country Championship titles in Guiyang, China on March 28 next year.
Race technical director, John Mwithiga, who also doubles up as national cross country coach, said the course will be demanding considering the current weather conditions in the city.
Meet director and AK Nairobi branch chairman Barnaba Korir said they are ready to welcome athletes from various parts of the country and are looking to take their performance a notch higher after winning the junior men’s title last year.
Korir said they expect city-based athletes to give a good showing in weekend meetings leading to the provincial championships and ultimately the nationals next year.
The weekend cross meetings will be followed by regional championships before the nationals which will also double up as the Africa round of the IAAF Permit meeting on February 14 at Uhuru Gardens.
The second meeting will be held in Iten on November 15, followed by Nyahururu (Dec 5), Machakos (Dec 20) and Sotik (January 3).
