In June 2000, just about 180 runners took off into the wild during the inaugural Safaricom Marathon held on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and managed to raise slightly above Ksh. 5,000,000.

Every year since the event has grown consistently. To date, the annual marathon, which is organised by Lewa and partner Tusk Trust and supported by Safaricom, has raised over Ksh. 650,000,000. Proceeds from the marathon have enabled the provision of education to over thousands of children; equipped eight medical facilities and supported community development projects which benefited over 50,000 people in the region.

Further afield, grants have been disbursed to more than 30 community conservancies and dozens of projects in Northern Kenya, the Coast and Rift Valley resulting in sustained growth in the population of endangered species such as the black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, mountain bongo and green turtle.

This year, we will celebrate the 20th edition of this incredible race. To mark this milestone, our aim is to raise Ksh. 100,000,000; 20 times the amount we raised in 2000!
