Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) will stage Open Swimming Championships on October 11 in Dar es Salaam, it was announced.
TSA Secretary General Noel Kiunsi said that the date was set during the association’s meeting held recently in the city. He said all clubs from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar as well as those from neighbouring countries have been invited to compete in the championships.
Formally, the competition was scheduled to take place from September 26-28 this year but was postponed due to various technical reasons.
Kiunsi said the TSA Technical Director was currently finalising the timetabling including the entries. He further said that the championships will be used to scout new swimmers who will represent the country in the FINA World Swimming Championships.
Tanzania has been invited to participate in the FINA Events which will take place in Doha, Qatar in December this year. Various activities will be carried out in Doha including FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), FINA World Aquatics Convention, FINA Swimming Coaches Golden Clinic and FINA/Doha 2014 Youth Programme.
Meanwhile, Kiunsi said TSA will organise a one-day national workshop/debate whereby the swimming family will discuss various issues about the development of the sport in the country.
“During the meeting, various reports were discussed including the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympics, CANA, FEASSA Games and coaches clinic,” Kiunsi said.
He also said that after gaining a high level recognition in FINA, the association is now working hard to make sure that Tanzania qualifies in various swimming competitions instead of getting the wild card.
“It was emphasized that club members should work hard to develop new talents,” he said.
